Youth fashion trends in Iran
In Iran's population of 80 million people 60% are under 30...
This means that the youth culture that I am designing my cover up suit pattern takes up over half of the population...
So there must be trends that I can have a look at.
This could fashion, art styles, political views and country development.
I did a little bit of research and immediately, I was given a bit of a surprise...
Writing this now I feel very stupid as I now can properly realise that I have been looking at the world through a keyhole that only focus's on the bad parts of life.
I was expecting to see a part of the world that wasn't very developed that had been scared by war even though there isn't one there...
Instead what looked at is a developed country!
With modern people doing modern things!
I was surprised and I also felt like hiding under my bed as I felt so stupid.
I swear we only hear the bad news from around the world just to make ourselves feel better about our own...
Anyway I think its time to talk about what trends have been occurring in the youth culture there recently...

So I wasn't looking for anything in particular as I really wanted to get to know the customer profile that I am designing my pattern for. Especially considering as of now I haven't made any contact with any of the surfers.
So I looked at some work from some fashion designers based in Iran to get an idea of what is trendy at this time.

What I see here though mainly is of course the use of a Hijab and also the use of bold shapes and colours also combined with the pattern work that mainly resembles flowers and plants rather than patterns on the ceiling of a mosque.

Now I realise that I have been looking at these women in the wrong way. I din't understand the concept of the Hijab as it isn't just something that you wear if you are of the Islamic faith but also part of the culture and is seen as required garment to wear just due to the culture you are living in.
So my thoughts now are to turn my attentions away from religious inspired pattern works and rather look at how the Iranian culture meets with art and trends that can allow me to design something that the people would want rather than require.

What I find amazing is just how prevalent your previous way of thinking is in our society. Is this something you could challenge in your work?
Some great reflection here.
