Things I like #3

When it comes to personal training the default thing to do is to sign up to your local gym or go for a friendly run around the local town waving to every other person you see on your pleasant journey as you burn those calories from that Mars Bar you had for breakfast...

But what if this all becomes a little to boring and routine?

I mean lets face it going to the gym simply means lifting weights in repetition for a few hours....

UP DOWN UP DOWN UP DOWN until you can no longer move somewhere without thinking that your the most powerful force of nature walking through the car park.

What if you want to increase that cardio strength even more at the same time

Ladies and gentlemen I give you the altitude mask.

The altitude mask is a mask which can be fastened onto the face with a Velcro sleeve which can be replaced by various colours to suit the user. It puts a resistance on the lungs making them work harder for oxygen. The restriction can be changed by applying different nozzles on the front of the device.
The mask is worn by various athletes such as...

The mask however does come under a lot of fire from some critics as they say that its a gimmick and that it doesn't work to increase the lung capacity in the same way as working at a higher altitude like long distance runners do.
Some people go as far as saying that its just a fashion accessory.

A few weeks before I came to university I got tired of looking at the mixed reviews and decided to check it out for myself and I managed to pick one up cheap for £30 (normally £40+)

Here is a video of me wearing the mask just after taking it out of the box...
Immediately I could tell that I was trying A LOT harder to breath. It was like trying to actually force the air into my lungs rather than it happening subconsciously.

I then started using in my preferred training techniques like runs, gym sessions and some MMA warm up work. Despite the annoying whistling noise it makes whenever you breath out its one of the best £30 I think I've ever spent. In the first couple weeks of heavily using it I wasn't enjoy it. It hurt to use it and there were stages of when I was really pushing myself on a run and I would begin to feel very dizzy and nearly loose my balance because of the lack of oxygen. It was only when I got fed up with it and went for an 8 mile run without it when I realised what it had actually done to my body.
I had done this route many times before and before i had the mask I would normally have to stop to rest at leas 2-4 times. This time however I only had to stop once... and that was when I had reached the halfway point so I normally stopped to turn around anyway.

So I have to conclude that this piece of clothing is a fully functioning tool. Not a gimmick and those who think it is just take it off right when the going gets hard.
