Summer project

Over the summer we were told to make an item of sportswear that wee would actually wear.

I really wanted my product to be unique and have something that no other product had done before.
Plus because I thought everyone on my course would be semi experts in fashion and textiles already I wanted to impress them with the little skills I had.

I ended up deciding to make a hood that would go over a shirt when someone was running, to prevent the full weight of a coat.

After my initial design ideas I made a prototype...
I made it out of paper just to give me an idea of what it would look in real life.
Even if paper isn't the best of materials to use, as it doesn't fall onto the body like a fabric would.

I then got on to making my unique hood.
By this time I had already decided on what it was going to look like and how it was going to be built.
The plan was to make a hood that could deflect rainfall and the wind and keep the users head warm in the process. I was going to do this by using two layers of fabrics. The inner was going to be a thick insulate whilst the outer layer would be lightweight and flexible whilst still being water "resistant".
The outer layer would be covered in fabric feathers like a bird which would deflect the rainfall and the gathered water on it by constantly flapping in the wind which at the same time, the hood was preventing from getting to the users head.

Just think of it as a really weird winter hood that looks like the costume from the Scottish guy from Raven.

Memory's of my childhood ticking by...

ANYWAY...

Here is how the process of making the hood went...

So I began with making a pattern in the shape of the hood that I wanted.
I took some inspiration from YouTube video's... In which what the shape of hood is supposed to look like sort of that.
Okay to be totally honest I pretty much winged it.
But I was happy with the result as I cut out the fabric.
I wasn't so good at using a template on top of fabric back then so the result of each of the parts looked like I had literally given the pieces of fabric to a frantic bear to rip... sorry cut them out.

The sewing part of the project was also challenging considering that my experience on a sewing machine is limited...
Never the less I was proud of myself. I didn't ruin my project and I fixed the sewing machine that I was using a few times by myself.

HA
look at me being reponsible

Even though it was probably my poor skill that was breaking it in the first place...
Well shit

Stop laughing at my face its a perfectly normal cheerful one
This never the less was the finished product.
I personally think it came out a lot better than I thought it would.
It fitted
Looked unique
And from my one test that  I did (because I was to scared to wear it outside) it actually worked.
Apart from the fact that it got heavier when it rained and didn't really shake off the moisture.

What would I do differently?
I would definitely use a water proof material on the outside. Because lets face it it would have worked properly otherwise.
And I would switch out the inner fleece for a lighter but still soft material as the hood did feel a little on the heavy side.
