Film
No James is big Film fan
Huge in fact
Before I took Sportswear design I was actually seriously considering taking film
At this very university
I got an interview
and got exactly the same offer as I did for Sportswear design (Which was a good one by the way)
But why didn't I end up taking film?
Well it was mainly due to a series of events that happened on the interview/open day
1. Out of the 50-100 people there on the day for an interview, it was clear that around 90% of them including me wanted to be a director.
This to me immediately gave me doubts into the people that I would be working with.
If everyone wanted to be a director then who would be willing to do Sound? or camera work? or editing? etc.
Also I didn't get the same wow factor for the subject then I did on the open day for sportswear/fashion design. The course seemed much more for me, plus it seemed like a more interesting career path compared to film.
Food for thought.
I still LOVE film though and I would like to put my favourite films under the spotlight.
So without further a do...
1. Interstellar
Interstellar for me is a life changing film
truly it is
If you were to ask me what the most influential things/people/texts rank for me, then this film would be in the top 3 maybe even in the number 1 spot sometimes.
When I first watched this film in the cinema back in 2014. I went with my parents after we decided that we needed to get out of the house... to go back inside and sit down for 3 hours.
We hadn't even seen any trailers or know what it was going to be about, we just knew that the director Christopher Nolan was someone to "look out for" at that time.
I remember the experience clear as day of how I sat in my chair midway from the back in the centre of the room. The combination of strong characters, complex story line, incredible music, amazing visuals and Matthew Mcconaughey's voice, it was an instant masterpiece.
I remember leaving the cinema with my parents just in compete awe. In fact I remember the conversation in the car coming home was staggered with deep conversation about the deeper meaning of the film and silence, just thinking about what we had seen.
Tell you what here is a clip from the film (I'll try not to spoil much of it)
This was one of my favourite scenes from the film out of the many to choose from pus this one doesn't really spoil anything like some of the other scenes do.
So sit back
Try to relax
Oh and I would almost DEFINITELY wear headphones and turn the volume WAY up...
Honestly I could talk about this film all day but I need to move on
2. Ex Machina

Ex Machina is a film that I have only seen once
Yet I don't need to see it again...
As films go its so unique and relatively unknown yet it has 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, funny how that works.
I remember watching this film after I had finished writing a huge essay for A2 media studies at 1 am in the morning...
I ended up re-writing the essay after watching this film
Its a very weird film, but in a very good way
It challenges you and your views on an issue that doesn't yet exist. But could do soon.
The film only has 3 main characters surrounded by extra's, this allows the audience to build a strong character profile.
